Most high-quality SFP cages are manufactured from copper alloys (such as Phosphor Bronze or Nickel Silver) for superior conductivity and EMI shielding. We use specialized plating techniques to prevent oxidation over long-term deployment.
SFP cages utilize EMI springs or gaskets that make contact with the transceiver module and the chassis bezel. This creates a Faraday cage effect, containing high-frequency signals and preventing interference with adjacent ports.
Press-fit (or Solderless) cages use elastic pins that are forced into PCB holes, creating a gas-tight mechanical and electrical connection without heat. Traditional Through-Hole requires wave soldering. Press-fit is preferred for high-density, multi-layer boards to avoid thermal stress.
The cage itself is a mechanical housing, but its design must account for the signal frequencies. SFP+ cages (10G) and SFP28 cages (25G) have optimized grounding points to maintain signal integrity at higher frequencies.
